Windows XP SP3 delayed
Microsoft appears unable to ‘multitask’ O/S development.
With all the effort going into getting Vista out the door this year, SP3 for XP has been delayed until late 2007!
That’s an extrordinary gap between Service Packs for a major o/s like XP, and a bummer for admins and anyone needing to install XP from an SP2 disk – by late year the post-XP updates list is going to be pretty long.
Here’s a Bink post about it…

So, after all the wait is Vista really going to be worth it?
Seems that some significant updates (features not security fixes) to XP would have been of more value.

Well, for a natural cynic like you Simon, who knows? ;-)
There are some nice advances and new features that will be attractive to some people. But I suspect XP will have an ongoing significant role for quite a long while yet, and quite legitimately.
A lot more about Vista will become clearer at the next beta release…

Those new Intel-powered MacBooks look pretty tempting. Maybe there really IS an alternative to Windows…

They are nice looking… and I’m sure they are nice… But use one? I still hate the way Apple does so many things (browse my posts on my iPod experience for some reasons!).

I can’t believe this. I just performed my annual fdisk/reinstall ritual and was confronted with downloading more than 100 MB of windows updates over dial-up! Fortunately I was able to get some service packs off the mirror at work which cut the MB’s, but I can’t believe they’re putting off SP3 until late 2007!

Now Pete, A couple of things:
Why are you doing an annual “fdisk/reinstall” with XP? Unless you run a lot of funny software, run beta software, or install/uninstall lots of stuff it really isn’t necessary for the vast majority of users…
Secondly, while SP3 is a long way away, I understand there will be ‘update rollups’ available, and I tend to keep a slipstreamed vesion of XP fairly up to date.
Oh, and you can always get broadband, or come and leach off the church connection. ;-)

Call it a hang over from when my PII really did run faster after a good format.
Call it spring cleaning.
