Godzilla PVR
Via Slashdot, comes this story .
As someone who is hanging out for PVRs to drop in price, this baby is just too good to be true!
11 tuners (7 x standard definition, 4 x HD), 1Tb of disk storage for recorded probgrams, this is a thing of pure geek beauty.
Mind you, finding 11 programs at any time that you would want to record is stretching it!

PVRs: a subject of considerable interest for me.
I’ve spent plenty of (too much) time thinking about homebrewing a PVR, but just can’t see the point. In the end, I’ll end up with something big, ugly and noisy—and it will be difficult for my family to operate it. Overall, I’m convinced that an appliance-style PVR is the way to go.
No doubt you are aware that the current market leader in this space (in terms of functionality) is Topfield. My Dad has had a TF500PVRT for several years and loves it. Going rate for the 120GB version is currenty around $750.
A recently-released alternative (also from Korea) is the Humax PVR-SMART. Gettable for just over $600. Not on my shopping list due to absence of component (YUV) outputs—my TV doesn’t have RGB inputs!
Both of these units get extensive coverage over on the DBA forums: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showforum=8
And if you are after a cheap and cheerful single tuner job, the Opentel/Wintal/Digicrystal clones can be had for around $250 on eBay. Also quite well regarded in terms of bang for buck.
One of Mrs Nerd’s friends has recently commented to her about how good their family’s Toppy is. It may be that a Toppy comes home to chez nerd Real Soon Now…

I’m with you all the way Richard! I’m just waiting for the prices to drop a tad more… and a Toppy will find a home here.
Of course, if the VCR happens to fail sometime soon, that might just accelerate the process (is it wrong to pray for hardware failure?) ;_)

Richard says: around my place, I have occasionally been accused of sabotage in such a circumstance…
