Community TV station in Sydney

Just found out there’s a new community free-to-air TV station starting today in Sydney.
Television Sydney fires up at 4:00pm local time and looks to have some worthwhile material on it’s first weeks program guide. It will transmit on UHF31 and has a big enough transmitter to reach most of Sydney.

Hmmm, wonder if there would be space for some gospel-focussed Christian broadcasting?

Will comment more after I sample it…

  1. Do you get sound? I have a perfect picture and fuzz for sound.

  2. I get stuff-all in terms of picture or sound at the moment!
I bit surprising, given our position. Might be antenna orientation, I guess.
Wondering how long I’ll wait before springing for a STB (well, actually a Toppy). ;-)

  3. Well, if they are at Gore Hill, your antenna should be pointing in the right direction.

    Is it analogue or digital?

And Neil, I fell prey to the Toppy bug a few weeks ago. Boy oh boy is this a gadget to revolutionise your viewing! And plenty of scope to techno-tinker (provided you stay away from the emasculated 4400 model).

I have the Toppy set up with the ICE TV guide delivered automatically each day into the unit, and can choose programs to record by scrolling through the fully populated guide.

  4. One more thing – the Australian Christian Channel already appears on free-to-air (on the channel 44 multiplex). Doesn’t seem very ‘Australian’ to me.

  5. Neil, Simon, I get channel 31 fine on rabbit ears on my side of the tracks.

On the digital side of things, we sometimes get 44. I’m yet to see anything of relevance on the ACC, either.

  6. Richard, ‘TV Sydney’ is analogue, and it is coming out of Gore Hill.
I suspect my antenna needs a little directional tweaking. It’s been nearly five years since it was put up.
Stop raving about your Toppy! I’m becoming covetous! Dan & Rich: ACC does suck big time. :-(

  7. I get crystal-clear TVS (odd that we are at a lower altitude/have more things which might interrupt a signal near us, but we get great reception on stations like TVS and SBS). However, even the best reception will not mitigate the laughability that is India TV.

TVS appears to take submissions from not-for-profit organisations and community groups. This could be a good opportunity? (I joked to Lorien yesterday that we should broadcast the last Lego video or something)

  8. But you will have a thumping big signal booster in your block of units Ben…
Oh, I think these stations are ripe for Christians to offer decent content…

  9. Careful doing comparisons between SBS and TVS – they are broadcast from two different sites and at different powers! Ch 31 is broadcast from the Broadcast Australia tower at Gore Hill(read: what everyone calls the ABC tower) whilst SBS is primarily broadcast from the TX Australia (read: ch 7/10 tower) on Mowbray Rd; SBS can however be broadcast from Gore Hill. Putting that aside, the ERP (effective radiated power) of TVS is less than SBS. You should be able to get it quite well at your place Neil if I can get it ok at Preston Hollow (yes we are lower than church). What’s your SBS reception like – marginal or OK?
ACC on Digital 44 is Australian by name only from my viewing of it…

  10. Oh, I got sound… it was a setting in the tuner that I had to change.

    Simon · Mar 1, 05:15 PM · #

  11. @Andrew, I’m aware of the differences between TVS and SBS – but I was drawing rough analogies because both are UHF and both broadcasting from east of here.
I suspect antenna alignment is the issue. We get a strong SBS signal, but with bad ghosting.
