More Gnostic nonsense

Gnosticism must be the flavour of the month.
This piece on today’s (Good Friday) web edition drags up the old controversy about Mary Magdalene.

To quote:

Alison Cotes, an Australian academic who wrote her PhD on Magdalene as well as the play Holy Lies, Unholy Truth, says: “Christianity disempowered the goddess by splitting her in two as the Virgin mother and the prostitute with no child. But there is no reference to Mary Magdalene as a prostitute.”

She’s right about the prostitute bit, but where is she coming from with the ‘goddess’ reference? I wish these writers would be clearer about what they are getting from Scripture and what comes from elsewhere.
Perhaps this all advance publicity for the May release of the DaVinci Code movie.
