Vale Brian King
Brian King died this morning after fighting cancer for two or three years. It’s one of those classic Christians sad/happy situations.
Very sad for Pamela and the boys as they grieve a lost husband and father. Sad for Pam, who never got to live out much of a retirement relaxing and ministering with Brian. Sad for their extended family who will miss his vivacious and infectious (if corny!) sense of humour, and his godly and wise counsel.
Happy because he is now enjoying life the way it was meant to be lived – safe and well in the presence of God (see Revelation 21:1-5), which he was fully anticipating, guaranteed by the gracious death and resurrection of Jesus.
Brian’s sermons were memorable by their three main features:
- His signature corny jokes, usually sports centred.
- His alliterating main points.
- His faithfulness to Scripture as the inspired Word of God.
Even though we groaned on cue, many people could remember the main points long after the talk (more than they can do with mine!).
Brian and Pam were good friends to Rob. and I. In particular, when Brian was Bishop of Parramatta and we were serving at Mt Druitt. On a personal front, he confirmed all four of our boys. He was warm and encouraging to us in our difficult ministry situation, and both took a genuine, personal interest in us and our family – even though we were just one ministry family out of many in the region. The numerous BBQ’s at Oatlands remain a warm memory
Even after they retired, they remained in touch in a personal way as they spent time in England and doing some travelling.
We are praying for Pam and the family, that they would be strengthened and encouraged by God through this tough time – and greatly encouraged in the knowledge that Brian served the Lord Jesus and his gospel faithfully and well, and is now enjoying His presence forever.

I think you’ve forgotten the Rugby analogies – that’s my strongest memory of him. Well, that and Tim chasing him around Parramatta Park wearing a wig and flairs

Well, I did mention “sports centred” jokes, but I’ll leave the image of Brian and Tim in wigs and flairs well alone!

I remember when I transferred to to Anglican church from another denomination. Brian reffered to it as playing for a different team. This comment has stuck by me and has been reffered to by me on more than one occastion.
As christians we all play God’s game but we may choose different teams.
