Firefox Tips

Firefox

The more I use Firefox as my web browser, the more I appreciate the thought and effort put into it.
On the rare occasion I have to use IE (6 or 7), I feel like I’m going back into the stone age of web browsing.

But… one of the minor frustrations with FF is how so many cool features are not really well documented. Which is why I’m always on the lookout for article like this one that reveal all sorts of very cool ‘power’ features.

As a quick preview of the article, here are the five tips it offers:

  1. Quick search – without going to a search engine first.
  2. Delete visited URL’s
  3. Navigate to browser tabs using the keyboard
  4. Start downloads instantly
  5. Grab files off webpages, even protected webpages

An additional short cut to go with 4. above is to is to hold down the ALT key and click on any link. It will download automatically.

But number 5 is the one that pushes my buttons – as something of a web scrounger, I love this!

It looks like FF 3.0 is close to release, and I hear lots of good things about that to look forward to…

  1. There’s 2 keyboard shortcuts I regularly use:

    To go to the address bar;
    Windows: Alt+D (or Ctrl+L)
    Mac: Cmd + L

But one I found recently, Ctrl+K on Win (Cmd+K on Mac) takes you to the search box.

Another for search, is to setup smart keywords.

For navigating through tabs, I use Ctrl+PgUp or PgDn (moves you forward and backwards through your open tabs), of course Ctrl+W closes a tab, Ctrl+T opens a new one.

Neil, do you have Lifehacker in your RSS feeds?

  2. Cool. Thanks Simon.
And yes, I do have Lifehacker in my feeds – one of the most consistently read, I might say. ;-)
